Cummings, Sarbanes Announce Nearly $2.5 Million in Grants to Housing Authority of Baltimore City

Funding Will Help Public Housing Residents Secure Higher-Paying Jobs

WASHINGTON, D.C. – (RealEstateRama) — Congressmen Elijah E. Cummings and John Sarbanes (both D-Md.) today announced that the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD) will provide $2,498,734 in grant funding to help low-income public housing residents in Baltimore find and keep good-paying jobs.

The new initiative will bring together various nonprofit and government partners – including the Baltimore City Housing and Health Departments, University of Maryland Extension, Baltimore City Community College, Greater Baltimore Urban League and the Baltimore and Maryland Educational Opportunity Center – in an effort to provide public housing residents with improved job training programs, financial counselling, job placement services and educational advancement programs.

“We need to do all we can to ensure that Baltimore residents are given opportunities to climb out of poverty and into the middle class,” Cummings said. “This grant will help give our residents needed support toward ending the cycle of generational poverty.”

“This much-needed grant funding will help improve the collaboration between federal, state and local partners in a sustained effort to help more Baltimoreans find good-paying jobs,” said Congressman Sarbanes, who will soon introduce a bill to expand youth apprenticeship programs in Baltimore and around the country. “We must continue deploying these kinds of resources and programs in order to provide better education and employment opportunities for communities that need them most.”
